GENITIVE CASE

Expression of absense. Genitive in the Negative Sentenses with the word " нет".

In order to express absence of something or somebody, in Russian we use the negative word НЕТ (=no) + a noun or a pronoun denoting the absent thing or person, in the Genetive case.

У неё есть собака.

У него нет собаки.

This is how one can make Singular form of a noun in Genetive.

Negative pronouns НИКТО́ and НИЧТО́ can be used in Genitive НИКОГО́ и НИЧЕГО́.

Это зал. Здесь никого́ нет.	Это магазин. Здесь ничего́ нет.

HOW TO EXPRESS POSSESSION. ЧЕЙ? (=WHOSE?)

When we want to say who possesses an object (when we answer the questions ЧЕЙ? ЧЬЯ? ЧЬЁ? ЧЬИ?), we use the Genitive case (2).

Это Джон.

Это его рюкзак.
Чей это рюкзак?
Это рюкзак Джона.

Это его газета.
Чья это газета?
Это газета Джона.

Это Мария.

Это её багаж.
Чей это багаж?
Это багаж Марии.

Это её визитка.
Чья это визитка?
Это визитка Марии.

- Чей роман «Идиот»?
- «Идиот» - роман Достоевского.

2. Definition (whay? which?)

The Genitive case is also used to answer the questions КАКОЙ? КАКАЯ? КАКОЕ? КАКИЕ?

Это Пушкин, русский поэт.

Это Музей Пушкина.
(Какой это музей?)

Какая это улица? – Это улица Чехова.
Какой это театр? – Это Театр оперы и балета.

3. The whole and the part

To talk about a part of a whole object we use in Russian the combination of two nouns: the first one indicating that part and the second one, used in the Genitive case, indicating the whole object, f.ex:

Это центр города.

Париж – столица Франции.
Дай мне стакан воды!

Pay attention!
When we need to change a case in this structure only the first noun is changed. The second noun in Genitive doesn't change.

Вот центр Москвы. В центре Москвы находится Театр оперы и балета. В Театре оперы и балета работают известные артисты.
